Founded in 2004 with the purchase of our first Gypsy Cobs from England, our beloved foundation stallion Tom of Brackenhill and the gorgeous mare Tia. Tia was Australia’s first breed champion at the 2008 Melbourne Summer Royal Show. Although class numbers were very small it was the first time that Gypsy Cobs had been shown at such a prestigious Australian event.
The presence of such charismatic, fairytale horses created an absolute sensation with the crowd and especially with the event photographers and judges who crowded around the ring. Onlookers were enthralled by the look of our Gypsy Cobs, this new breed of horse that was nothing like anything they had seen before.
In 2005 Surrey Springs purchased a further two exceptional purebred Gypsy Cob fillies bred by some of England’s finest breeders, the world renowned Domino of Brackenhill (imp UK) and the gorgeous pony Cob Kesali (imp UK). Domino and Kesali travelled to Australia in the same crate as Geraldine Chapman’s Jango Dancer of Brackenhill and Danni Showers’ Storm of Brackenhill.
So began Australia’s fascination with the Gypsy Cob.
In 2009 our herd increased to nine purebred imported Gypsy Cob breeding mares and three imported Gypsy stallions of exceptional quality with the importation of Leah, Ivy, Thistle, Clover, Pepsi and Nyssa along with The Paladin and the beautiful colt Chance of Durham.
On the 30th of October 2010 The Black Teddy Mare arrived in Australia. A daughter of the famous Teddy Mare, she has proven to be an outstanding broodmare with an impeccable temperament. Teddy is a source of much delight.
