Spinosad is a very effective treatment to help control and eradicate feather mites.
Horses need a follow up application within 10 to 14 days to kill the newly hatched mites. Dilution rates of 5 ml per liter of the active ingredient (Extinosad brand commonly sold for use on sheep in Australia) means a little goes a long way.
To be truly effective infested stabled horses should have their bedding removed and burnt if possible. All surfaces that the horse regularly contacts, rugs and grooming equipment should be sprayed with the solution as recent evidence has found that the mite can live in the environment much longer than previously thought.
